Supervision

What is Supervision?

When applied to coaching, counselling and the helping professions, supervision is the term used to describe the method for assuring quality of service, safety of the client and the continuing professional development of the person delivering the service.

Supervision is important for these professions as the nature of their work carries a high risk of emotional involvement with the client or patient. It provides important checks and balances which ensure the safety and well-being of both the client and the practitioner, as well as providing professional development for the practitioner.

Supervision Provides:

  • a mentor for those newly trained or qualified

  • a confidential space for the coach / counsellor to develop their coaching skills through guided reflection on their practice

  • a check that the coach is practising ethically and respecting the confidentiality of the client

  • a method of evaluating and improving the service to the client
